Products & Services
Each month we research, code and add as many as 8,000 new products to our SPINS Product Library database, segmenting them by the natural and specialty product attributes underlying consumers’ purchasing decisions.
We provide information about more than 200,000 natural and organic products segmented into our industry-standard hierarchy of 92 categories and 469 subcategories, with over 560 primary functional ingredients and 50 product attributes. Our Product Library is the most complete and up-to-date resource of its kind in the industry and is at the heart of what makes our data and services go unmatched.
Our team of experts examines and codes thousands of products for the attributes that drive consumer purchasing – whether related to product positioning, label content, primary ingredient content, brand positioning, third party certifications and more. By segmenting products by these attributes, we provide compelling data and unparalleled insights into relevant trends.
Each UPC-coded item is added to one of 92 product categories across 10 departments (e.g. grocery, body care, vitamins). Items are further segmented into one of 469 subcategories.
The package is becoming as important as the food it contains. We code for a wealth of product attributes observable on a label, including vegan, hormone free, gluten free, SLS free, aluminum free, fortification, humane animal welfare, grassfed, cage-free, and supplement type.
In addition to coding for product attributes observable on a label, we have developed exclusive coding that recognizes how brands are positioned towards ‘natural’ in the marketplace, from the natural and specialty consumer’s point of view. Core natural products are referred to as the Natural Products Industry product universe (the NPI). The NPI is the core product universe and benchmark by which all other wellness products are measured.
Track products by over 560 primary functional ingredients including probiotics, super foods, sweeteners, enzymes and more. Items are coded as having a primary ingredient based on the most dominant ingredient by weight, or the ingredient most relevant to a health benefit claims linked to a product.
Consumer demand for certification labels is on the rise as shoppers seek transparency in the products they purchase and manufacturers strive to gain their trust. From gluten-free certification to Non-GMO verification, products meeting the strict standards set by various third party certifiers are performing exceptionally well. We partner with leading industry certifiers including B Corporation, FairTrade USA, the Whole Grains Council, and the Gluten Free Certification Organization.
What are your opportunities for product development within vitamins, herbs and supplements? We map vitamins, herbs and supplements to 24 health focus attributes that are marketed to remedy particular health concerns such as allergies, bone health, and weight loss. SPINS segments these products according to overt marketing claims found primarily on product labels and secondarily on brand and industry websites. We also consider FDA approved claims and primary ingredients intended to address particular health concerns.
“How do I ensure my products are included in the SPINS Product Library?”
Send us the details. Please follow the guidelines below to submit your UPC coded products moving in retailer supermarkets, drugstores, and mass-market outlets to SPINS and The Nielsen Company for inclusion in our reporting services.
Please regularly provide us with information for both your existing brands and products, as well as any new products that will eventually launch in retail.
Submit products via the PIRC web portal. Product information collected by PIRC includes full product images, brand, size, description, category, and a variety of label claims and marketing information. New users can register online today at pirc.spins.com.
If you are expecting to see your items in SPINSscan Conventional services, product information must also continue to be sent directly to The Nielsen Company to ensure that your products are entered into its library. SPINSscan Conventional services are provided by SPINS through our strategic partnership with The Nielsen Company, based on a data feed sent from Nielsen to SPINS. As a result, items can only be active in this SPINS service if they are identified and activated by The Nielsen Company. Products will first appear in SPINSscan Conventional services typically 1 period following their release within Nielsen services. Nielsen does not forward images to SPINS, so any images you send to Nielsen must also be submitted through PIRC.

The PIRC web portal is a single, centralized, industry-based repository of product information jointly managed by SPINS and the manufacturer community. PIRC was developed in collaboration with leading industry partners as a platform to bring standards, consistency, improved accuracy, and greater depth & breadth to the capture of Natural and Specialty product information. Information submitted through PIRC will be used by SPINS to support our services, and it will be used by PIRC’s coalition of retailer and distributor partners to support a more comprehensive product data exchange.
