Methodology
SPINSscan Natural is the industry's only comprehensive source of information on all UPC-coded products selling through the Natural Products Supermarket Channel in the United States. SPINS collects scanner-based sales data from store registers on all UPC-coded products from a sampling of natural products supermarket retailers. Using proven sampling and projection methodologies managed by our Chief Statistician Bill Hawkes, sales from cooperating retailer partners are projected to represent sales from the entire natural products supermarket channel.
Natural Products Supermarket Channel Definition
Working closely with our industry partners SPINS manages ongoing store surveys and maintains the industry's most up to date natural channel universe definitions, including store counts and "all commodity volume" (ACV), estimates.
The Natural Products Supermarket Channel is defined by SPINS as any full-format supermarket selling more than $2 million in annual sales with at least 50% of sales coming from Natural Product Industry segments and less than 50% of sales coming from supplements.

Sample Composition
Because the natural products supermarket universe offers a high degree of product variety and varying store-formats, SPINS is sampling from better than one out of every three stores across the universe. Large providers of scan data services (e.g. IRI/ACNielsen) sample, on average, from approximately one in ten stores across their retail universe.

To maintain accurate Natural channel sales reporting, SPINS periodically restates our SPINSscan Natural database. Key Accounts
SPINS offers account-specific reporting for a number of chains and associations, including the National Cooperative Grocers Association (NCGA) and the Independent National Food Retailers Association (INFRA).
