Industry Trends

Market Trend: Digestive Aids and Enzymes

Defined as single and combination nutrients and/or herbs taken to support digestive health, the Digestive Aids and Enzymes category is on a 3-year upward sales trend, with percentage growth rates much greater than those in the Supplements segment overall. In the 52-week period ending 8/12/06, cross-channel sales totaled $355M, an increase of 16% over the prior year.

This category is an important one to watch, as the health concerns driving its sales are very common in the US and are increasing steadily. Understanding subcategory dynamics and consumer purchase behavior is critical to success with Digestive Aids and Enzymes, as they vary considerably by channel.

Total dollar sales are lower in the conventional channel, but they have grown nearly twice as much in the same period—63 percent over the prior year to $3.6 million.
